Compensation consideration for Smithfield tenants
The proposed construction of London's Crossrail service which will operate near Smithfield Market is being put back on the government's legislative agenda following the inclusion of the project in the Queen's speech.
In the meantime the parliamentary select committee, which is considering the Crossrail bill, has recognised Smithfield Market as having 'special' and 'unique' status, meaning that the market and members of the Smithfield Market Tenants Association (SMTA) will be protected should they suffer any adverse impact during the Crossrail construction.
SMTA chairman, Gregory Lawrence, said the association had been very fortunate to receive a compensation package because the market "will be affected in some way or other" during construction of Crossrail.
A spokeswoman for Smithfield Market said there had been developments published by Crossrail, including the requirement of additional land at Charterhouse Square and Lindsey Street/Hayne Street/Long Lane.
She added lorry movements during the construction period could disturb the market buildings and produce dust which would damage the meat at the market.
A spokeswoman for Crossrail said: "We are currently in negotiations with both the SMTA and the Corporation of London regarding lorry movements at Farringdon Station during construction. "At present we do not propose to make any changes to current lorry loads and in general our works will be during normal working hours whereas most of the current market traffic takes place at night.
"We are also proposing to use part of Lindsey Street (at the Eastern side of the market) as a temporary worksite which will mean the road will be temporarily narrowed."
The route of the new cross-London rail link runs from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west right across the capital into Essex and Kent in the east. It travels underground through the city centre between Paddington and east London and is planned to be complete by 2015, costing £10.29bn.
