Get an insight into the Irish meat industry

The three-day trip, from 10-12 March, had been scheduled for last September, but was delayed by animal health scares that swept Britain at the time.

Highlights of the trip are likely to include a visit to the Ashtown Food Research Centre in Dublin, a visit to a major meat manufacturer, and a tour of the Faculty of Food Science and Technology at University College, Cork. A good understanding of how the meat supply chain works will be given during a visit to AIBP Cahir, that is likely to take in a plant visit as well as to a supply farm and a retailer.

The Guild, the training and education arm of the Butchers' Company, is working with Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board, to arrange the trip. Bord Bia will give a presentation on the meat industry, with particular reference to the beef and lamb sectors.

The trip is open to anyone, as long as they are current members of the Guild or join beforehand. Several young butchers are being sponsored.
