Shipping emissions higher than airfreight
Shipping's carbon dioxide emissions are twice the level of aviation, a new report has claimed.
The study, by Intertanko, one of the maritime industry's key bodies, claimed emissions have risen sharply in the last six years.
Previous reports by International Maritime Organisation said levels were comparable with those of the airfreight sector, but Intertanko said its figures were the most realistic estimation of the current levels of CO2 from ships.
It said growth in global trade, coupled with ships burning more fuel to deliver freight faster, has contributed significantly to the increase.
