Further swan has bird flu

Defra has today confirmed that another mute swan has highly pathogenic avian influenza

Following confirmation on Thursday 10 January of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (AI) in three swans in Dorset, Defra has today confirmed that another mute swan collected on 11 January as part of wild bird surveillance from the same area has tested positive for highly pathogenic H5N1 AI.

There is currently no evidence to suggest widespread disease in the wild bird population, but enhanced surveillance is taking place and poultry keepers in the area are reminded to remain vigilant and report any signs of disease immediately. There is no evidence of disease in domestic birds.

A 3km control zone has been set up around the outbreak, which restricts the movement of poultry and increases biosecurity measures for premises, people and vehicles. All commercial poultry farms are being inspected by vets and all bird hunts have been banned. Surrounding the control zone is a 10km monitoring area, in which movements of poultry and other captive birds is still restricted and there are increased biosecurity measures.
