Telegraph launches food awards
Food producers from throughout the UK are set to battle for gold in the Daily Telegraph's second annual Taste of Britain competition.
The competition will see producers compete in five categories - Best UK Food, Best UK Drink/Beverage, Best Regional Food, Best Organic Food, and Best Seasonal Food - for gold, silver and bronze medals.
The produce is judged on everything from production standards and sustainability to creating a positive impact on the local community.
"Our readers care greatly about the quality and origins of the produce they buy," said Jon Stock, weekend editor of the Daily Telegraph. "Taste of Britain is a fantastic way for us to showcase the very best of home-grown quality regional foods produced in this country."
The Telegraph Media Group (TMG) has once again negotiated a commercial partnership with Sainsbury's for the competition. "Through the last Taste of Britain we met some extraordinary producers, several of whom now supply Sainsbury's," said Judith Batchelar, director of Sainsbury's brand.
"I believe the quality and variety of British food and drink is way above anything we have seen in years, so I'm confident that there will be an outstanding class of winners again this year."
This year's non-commercial partners are Defra, international food and drink expert IGD and market development agency Food From Britain.
Lord Rooker, Defra's farming and food minister, said: "Part of the enjoyment of food is knowing where it came from. If people asked these questions when they went into a shop or restaurant, it would change the market and the way we look at food."
The closing date for competition entries is 27 July and forms can be accessed at Telegraph.co.uk/tasteofbritain. The winners will be announced in a 16-page special supplement in the Daily Telegraph on 22 September.
