Morrisons takes top title

 - Published:  16 June, 2008

Morrisons was named 'Grocer of the Year 2008' at the Grocer Gold Awards held last week.

The award came as Morrisons announced an industry-leading like-for-like sales growth of 7% for the first three months of 2008, having seen customer numbers top 10 million for the first time.

The retailer was praised by judges for its strong business results, the success of its stores' refresh programme and its focus on the unique fresh food 'Market Street' offering, with more people in-store preparing fresh food than any other retailer, including skilled craft butchers and bakers and fully-trained fishmongers.

Morrisons chief executive, Marc Bolland, said: "I dedicate this most prestigious award to all colleagues who have worked so hard through more difficult times and stood-up strong to achieve this tremendous result. We now have more and more people shopping at Morrisons, appreciating our great fresh foods, service and value."
