Tesco stays strong
UK number one supermarket Tesco has announced Christmas trading as "successful" following strong growth and record sales.
Like-for-like sales, excluding petrol, rose by 5.9% in the six weeks to 6 January, and the retailer claimed sales were driven by organic foods, which rose 39% and it's premium "Finest" range, which gained by more than 55%.
Tesco's internet business also experienced strong growth, with total sales up by more than 30% to over £150m. The firm said its grocery team delivered more than 14 million items in its busiest Christmas week to date.
Overseas operations were also reported to be strong over Christmas, with international sales reported to be up 15.8%.
According to industry experts TNS Worldpanel, Tesco increased its share of the UK market over the holiday period to 31.4% of all sales in the supermarket sector for the 12 weeks ending 31 December.
