A LITTLE SLOPE IN THE PLAYING FIELD

He is correct in saying that farm shops can give butchers a run for their money. Defra looks benevolently upon these farm start-ups and grant aid their infrastructure costs. It is a little different for the town trader.

When I bought my little shop amongst the chimney pots it was in need of some investment. However the only assistance I received was an Improvement Notice from the EHO slapped on the premises. This set the business back years as they insisted that we renovate the rear production area before the front sales area.

The letter goes on to describe his difficulty with the various Defra claim forms. A tricky one for the butchers whose revenue for living and reinvestment comes from the marketplace. There appears to be a little slope in the playing field.
