Green shoots of recovery continue apace at M&S
Marks & Spencer continues to
recover, with the announcement of its fourth consecutive increase in quarterly sales.
For the 13 weeks to 1 July, sales rose by 8.2% against the same period last year, while food climbed by 5.8%.
However, food sales were seen in the City as "disappointing" against the backdrop of both Easter and the World Cup occurring during the quarter.
Chief executive Stuart Rose said: "I'm not expecting to report an 8.2% increase in the next
quarter." Analysts predicted sales to increase by about 4% in the
second quarter.
The retailer is also set to
create 4,000 new shopfloor jobs and is also expanding overseas, with a planned roll-out of its franchised stores
