High street sales improve

 - Published:  05 May, 2006

The Office for National Statistics calculates that sales on the High Street in March rose 0.7% against February's plus 0.3%.

Against March 2005, sales were up 2.6%. Quarterly sales figures, however, paint a bleaker scenario. In January to March 2006, sales were down 0.7% from the previous quarter.

Retailers are having to cut prices to lure customers in - at the expense of profits.
