Buoyant food sales buck bleak High Street scene
Britain's buoyant food retailing sector is the one exception to a relatively bleak High Street scenario- with only a few stores such as Harrods delivering better-than-expected sales figures.
The number of customers visiting Britain's shops between Christmas and the New Year fell by 2.4 per cent against 2004 according to FootFall, which researches shopper numbers - despite a strong start to sales offering discounts of up to 75 per cent. SPSL which also measures the number of shoppers to the High Street reports a fall of 13.4 per cent last Thursday and a fall of 15.9 per cent on Friday.
