Farm trio wins passage abroad
A trio of lucky farmers in Wales have received scholarships from Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) to observe new practices on farms in New Zealand and Scandinavia.
As part of the Farming Connect scheme, backed by the Welsh Assembly Government, HCC has launched Farming Connect scholarships, to send farmers on visits to other farms abroad. Marc Jones of Berriew, Tony Davies of Elan Valley and Keith Williams of Llandrindod Wells are the first recipients of the new grants.
Marc Jones, 25, who comes from a family of farmers, said: "I aim to take over the family farm in around five years' time and would like to develop my farm business skills further to advise farmers specifically on the costs of production and improving gross margins.
Tony Davies, 43, runs a 1,700-acre hill farm, where he sells his own organic mutton. He hoped the trip would help him broaden his knowledge and skills to develop his business.
Running a mixed beef and sheep farm, Keith Williams, 43, the final recipient of the new scholarship, said the New Zealand trip would help him see his business from a different perspective.
