MPs set to continue farm visits in the wake of media interest

 - Published:  03 October, 2008

Following MP for Sherwood Paddy Tipping's recent visit to local pig farmer Andrew Baugh, which generated extensive press coverage in the region, several more MP visits are set to take place.

Earlier this week, MP for Newbury Richard Benyon went to meet farmer Frank Clothier and, over the weeks ahead, the following visits have also been arranged: MP for Burton, Janet Dean, to meet farmer Martin Barker; MP for Brigg and Goole, Ian Cawsey, to meet farmer John Godfrey; MP for the Cotswolds, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, to meet farmer James Hart; MP for Yorkshire East, Greg Knight, to meet farmer Denis Lockwood.

The visits were set up to give pig farmers a chance to discuss their issues face-to-face with their MPs and to show MPs in various constituencies that, despite having some of the highest animal welfare standards in Europe, the British pig industry is in crisis.

The increase in the cost of feed over the past year means many farmers have sustained significant losses, with the industry as a whole losing over £150m.
