National Farmers Union president Peter Kendall has been named the Farm Business Food and Farming Personality of the Year 2007 at a ceremony in the House of Commons.

The award, presented by leading farming magazine Farm Business and sponsored by McDonald's, recognises someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion and support of British farming over the last year.

Farm Business editor, Cedric Porter, said: "This year has been one of unprecedented challenge and opportunity for British farming.

"Throughout the year, Peter Kendall has been at the forefront of defending, promoting and championing the industry. He has highlighted the real pain that this year's disease outbreaks and flooding has caused farmers across the country, but also stressed that British farming has a vital role in providing the food, fibre and fuel that the public at home and abroad cannot do without.

"Peter has always portrayed British farmers as professional business people who can provide many of the solutions for a world looking for safe, good quality and affordable food that has been produced in a way that enhances and protects the countryside and addresses the challenges of climate change.

"He is a worthy winner of the Farm Business Food and Farming Personality of the Year Award."
