Butcher admits hygiene breaches

A Lancashire butcher had meat for sale that was unfit for human consumption, a court heard.

Shahid Ditta, 23, who operated the Shamas Halal Meat Shop in Nelson admitted breaches of the meat hygiene regulations when he appeared before Burnley Crown Court.

The court heard that environmental health inspectors found the unsafe beef in a walk in fridge at the shop.

It was then established that the meat, bought from a local abbatoir, did not have the correct meat inspection stamps.

Passing a sentence of 160 hours community service the judge told Ditta: "You bought this meat outside the safe EC regulated market - you say you bought it from an abattoir which you regularly used, but this meat did not have the correct documents.

"It is people like you who are giving custom to this trade of illegal meat and that is why there is a system in place to protect public health."
