Farmers to study overseas
An opportunity for Welsh farmers to study abroad has been unveiled by HCC - Meat Promotion Wales.
The Farming Connect Sheep and Beef Development Programme, managed by HCC, have launched their search for their annual Sheep and Beef Scholarship winners.
Successful applicants could have the opportunity to spend up to six weeks experiencing the sheep and/or beef industry in a country of their choice.
Applicants must show why it would be of benefit to them as individuals and to the Welsh industry in general if they were selected.
One of last year's winners, Paul Morris, from Lampeter Velfrey, Pembrokeshire, travelled to New Zealand and spent six weeks visiting various farms on both islands. He is now keen to implement an easy care sheep management system on his farm - a common practice in New Zealand, where he saw large farms, with 3,500 ewes, succeed with a very small labour force and no government subsidies.
He said: "The scholarship has been priceless to me. Without this opportunity I would never have been able to visit New Zealand and seen their processes first hand and wouldn't have gained the confidence to change my ways of farming."
HCC will award the scholarships to applicants who are employed on a full time basis within the Welsh sheep and/or beef industry and who will be able to make an ongoing contribution to the industry in Wales.
If you are interested in applying, application forms are available by phoning 01970 625050, visiting the website www.hccmpw.org.uk or by writing to Hybu Cig Cymru-Meat Promotion Wales, PO Box 176, Aberystwyth, SY23 2YA.
The closing date is 9 July 2007.
