Welsh welcome EU decision to resume exports under normal conditions
Hybu Cig Cymru-Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) has welcomed a decision by the EU to allow the export of meat from Wales to resume under normal conditions.
This will now pave the way for Welsh red meat exporters to rebuild their trading links to their full extent with the likes of France, Italy and the Benelux countries.
The decision by the EU, which will come into force by the middle of November, has split the UK into three area and states that Wales is declared as an FMD Free Export Area that allows the export of meat under normal EU rules.
Reacting to the news, Rees Roberts, Chairman of HCC said: "This is a very welcomed decision that has been long awaited. We can now begin to look forward to the return of normal market conditions for an industry that has been through unprecedented turmoil over the last few months."
Although the export of red meat products from the UK resumed on 12 October 2007 it was subject to very strict conditions.
Roberts said: "Our priority now is to assist the Welsh red meat exporters to help recover the export market for Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef so that European customers once again can enjoy the quality of our products."
