A poultry processor has embarked on a two-stage £1.5m investment to increase production in the West Country.

Lloyd Maunder, part of the 2 Sisters Group, has completed the first stage of its investment in just two days, spending £750,000 in its processing and packaging lines to "ramp up" production, according to Richard Maunder, site director for the firm's Cullompton plant.A further £750,000 is also to be invested in installing a gas stunning system for its poultry slaughter line, he said.

The first phase of investment was designed to improve the flow of the facility, Maunder said: "We've gone from processing 480,000 birds a week to 640,000 since January, but the secondary processing area couldn't keep up."

The investment has seen a new conveyor system installed to take product from packaging through to despatch. The firm is now looking to hit a target of around 750,000 birds a week.

As part of the work, each individual worker on the processing line will be given a checkweigher, which Maunder said will allow the business to monitor giveaway and individual performance.
