EU backs plans for private storage aid to combat low pigmeat prices

Under the programme, pigmeat producers can claim EU aid when storing meat for between three and five months. They can then release meat when prices have recovered. At an EU Council of Ministers meeting, the initiative was welcomed by Belgian, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, Spanish, French, Irish, Cypriot, Lithuanian, Luxembourg, Hungarian, Netherlands, Austrian, Romanian and Slovenian ministers. Some delegations also called for export refunds to help exporters cope with the current strength of the Euro against the US dollar, and increases in feed prices.
