Firm fined on effluent overflow

A Lincolnshire-based rendering firm has been fined over£10,000 after animal effluent overflowed into a water-course, damaging

the environment.

A Hughes of Skellingthorpe admitted pollution offences during a hearing before Lincoln magistrates. The court heard that the incident took place last summer, when unprecedentedly high rainfall levels caused a waste tank to overflow.

The Environment Agency prosecutor said that company employees only checked the tank once a week, and the tank had overflowed several days before it was checked.

In mitigation, it was said that the tank was now checked on a daily basis.

The company was fined £8,000, with £3,200 costs.
