Morrisons commits to stocking 100% fresh British lamb
Morrisons is to stock 100% British fresh lamb in all its stores to the year end and the whole of 2008.
Marc Bolland, the chief executive of Morrisons, announced the move yesterday at the English Farming & Food Partnerships Conference. He said it was being made to support British farmers facing enormous challenges. The chain would sell British lamb instead of New Zealand lamb.
In September this year Bolland made a commitment to stocking 100% fresh pork after he met pork producers at the IGD conference. He said the chain which stocked 95% fresh British pork would increase that figure by five per cent to 100%. "We are the first of four retailers to make this commitment. Furthermore, we pay above the market price for pork, We have a long term commitment to sourcing British produce where possible."
Bolland added that Morrisons stocked 97% fresh beef and 100% turkey and fresh and frozen chicken,
