Grampian Country Foods in Winsford, Cheshire, has been working with the Red Meat Industry Forum (RMIF) to cut costs. A team of production operators has taken on board the 'lean' manufacturing concept and has calculated that, if rolled out across the rest of the company, it could potentially save £180,000 a year.

The RMIF's Kevin Bennett worked with Grampian's continuous improvement manager John Stonely and four operators over six months on production line four, the plant's busiest, supplying meat products to the high street retail trade. The exercise involved training people to adopt 'lean' techniques by spotting inefficiencies.

The operators discovered areas that could be improved, such as measuring, more frequently, the accuracy of the automatic cutting equipment. Doing this improved the quality, presentation and yield of the product..
