Organic turkeys sales are up 40% at Marks & Spencers, the chain has claimed.

The retailer is also claiming to be the first on the high street to offer all its whole, fresh turkeys as organic or free range, and has reported no problems with shortages.

It said organic turkey, while still a niche product, is one of the fastest growing area of its turkey business, with sales up 40% on last year and likely to break the £1m barrier for the first time.

The retailer has also introduced a number of new organic turkey lines, including organic crown with streaky bacon, and an organic basted joint.

Steven Esom, director of food at M&S said: "Far from suffering a shortage we upped our order for Organic turkeys this year knowing customers were increasingly wanting to have an Organic bird as the centrepiece of their Christmas dinner.

"You name it, we've got it this Christmas - whole fresh Organic birds for big family celebrations, as well as Organic turkey crowns for smaller gatherings or for those looking to avoid the hassle of carving a whole bird."
