Heart of glass
TRIALS OF an innovative reed bed design for waste management using recycled glass in place of quarried gravel have proven a success at a Norfolk site of Europe's largest integrated turkey producer.
Bernard Matthews is encouraged by the results of the trial, funded by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and carried out at its site in Great Witchingham.
The new medium successfully removed suspended solids and biological oxygen demand (BOD) from effluent at the site.
Graham May, general manager for maintenance at Bernard Matthews, said: "Our effluent discharge already exceeded industry guidelines, but we are always looking to further improve water quality. We were therefore eager for the trial to be conducted at our site."
