Local chicken for local people

The move is part of Tesco's ongoing campaign to stock local products for local people.

The new range of West Country branded chicken is being produced for Tesco by Lloyd Maunder, part of the 2 Sisters Food Group, and the chicken is being sourced from family-run farms in Somerset, Gloucestershire, Devon, Dorset and Cornwall.

Jo Wren, Tesco spokesperson, said: "We've been working towards launching the West Country chicken range for some time. Regional sourcing makes sense on so many levels. It helps to cut down on the carbon footprint, meets the growing demand for locally grown products and supports the local economy.

"We've developed this range in response to our customers telling us they want, quality chicken from the area that's also affordable."

The new label is initially appearing on five of Tesco's key product lines in the region, including small, medium and large whole birds, breast fillets and thighs.

Further product lines will be switched to feature the West Country produced chicken for the region's stores over the coming months, with the aim of having the majority, if not all of the Tesco chicken offering as locally produced.

Andrew Maunder, commercial director with Lloyd Maunder, said: "This new range of local chicken will make it easier for Tesco West Country shoppers to choose regionally sourced goods.

"This is great news for everyone and gives a boost to the environment. Our farmers have a local route to market, we reduce our carbon footprint and customers get a quality local chicken for the lowest possible cost."
