Hugh settles Tesco bill

The chef had called on the retailer to waive the charge, which it said was the cost of mailing the documents to shareholders, due to the late tabling of the resolution.

Fearnley-Whittingstall is calling on Tesco to upgrade its welfare standards to the RSPCA Freedom Foods system.

The huge bill for tabling the resolution almost derailed the campaign, but thanks to a deadline extension by Tesco, the chef was able to raise the money with an auction, a donation of £42,500 from Compassion in World Farming, and a personal donation of £30,000.

He said: "This is not just about animal welfare, it also raises the question of how huge public corporations communicate with, and hold themselves accountable to, their shareholders and customers."
