Grampian announces job cuts at Banff

The company said the jobs - a third of the workforce at its Banff plant - have to go in the face of poor trading and increased competition. Commenting on the news, local MP and Scottish Nationalist Party leader Alex Salmond said he would now be calling on the European Parliament to investigate the dumping of meat onto the UK market from abroad, a practice which has escalated due to the bird ?u scare. Grampian will now consult with staff regarding the details of the redundancy programme.

Grampian said it will stop primary processing and whole-bird packing at Banff, but will continue to use the facility as a chicken portions packing centre. Salmond said: "It is ironic that the outbreak of bird ?u on the Continent should be felt in Banff, not because of a decline in UK sales, but because of cheap French and German produce redirected into the UK. I am, therefore, having the issue raised in the European Parliament."

It is expected that 140 staff will retain their jobs at the plant.
