Organic award memorial
A new award has been launched in memory of Bill Allen, the late director of certifier Organic Farmers & Growers (OF&G).
Created jointly by OF&G and the Organic Livestock Marketing Co-operative (OLMC), where Allen worked as an advisor, the award is aimed at beef and sheep producers who are members of either or both organisations.
For many years Allen was an authority on organic livestock and put endless energy and time into advising producers on increasing the profitability of their farms. Since he died in September 2005 many farmers have continued to express their appreciation of his input into their businesses and of his genuine and trustworthy personality.
To recognise this important contribution to the industry OF&G and OLMC have created the Bill Allen Memorial Award.
This year the winner will be chosen from a written application entitled: "Where do you think the future of organic farming is going and what on-farm preparations are you making or planning to meet that challenge?"
Richard Thompson, chairman of OF&G and long time friend of Allen, said: "Bill was a practical person, who never really put pen to paper, and we are sure it would bring a smile to his face that this year's annual award will be selected from a written application!"
The winner of the competition will receive a cheque for £500 plus an engraved glass tankard. There will be one winning entry, to be judged after the closing date of 30 September.
Entrants must be a member of either OF&G or OLMC and must be an organic or converting beef or sheep producer. Entries should be no longer than 1,000 words but extra pictures and tables may be included.
The closing date for entries is 30 September and the winner will be notified by 30 November. The winner must also be prepared to take part it publicity activities for OF&G and OLMC.
Entries should be emailed to OF&G at info@organicfarmers.org.uk with subject line 'Bill Allen Memorial Award' or posted to: Bill Allen Memorial Award, Organic Farmers & Growers Ltd, Elim Centre, Lancaster Road, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY1 3LE.
