Europe votes to raise limit for cattle VC removal to 30 months
The meat industry was given some good news when SCoFCAH revealed it had voted to increase the age for vertebral column removal from 24 months to 30 months at yesterday's meeting.
The meat industry was given some good news today when the European Standing Committee on Food Chain and Animal Health (SCoFCAH) revealed it had voted to increase the age for vertebral column removal from 24 months to 30 months at yesterday's meeting.
The SCoFCAH decision was a welcome surprise as one member state had voted against the raising of the age limit on beef-on-the-bone saying it needed Parliamentary approval.
The decision will now be subject to the statutory three month scrutiny process by the European Parliament after which it will be published in the official Journal in January 2008. It is expected to come into effect three days later allowing butchers to mature meat from older cattle on the bone and allow them to sell the traditional T-bone steak without the complications of special licensing.
