NHS buys Halal food for babies

Asian food company Mumtaz struck a deal with the NHS to offer babies Halal baby food for the first time. Mumtaz's baby food range can already be found in Tesco, Asda and Morrisons.

Asian food company Mumtaz has struck a deal with the NHS to offer babies Halal baby food for the first time. Mumtaz's baby food range can already be found in supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda and Morrisons.

Mumtaz's commercial director Bill Kimberling said: "Meat is an excellent source from iron and Muslim babies often suffer from an iron deficiency because they eat mainly a vegetable-based diet.

"Apart from being made to the strictest Halal standards every Mumtaz main course offers 20% more meat than other leading baby foods."

The company is reporting a surge in interest amongst maternity and paediatric units, keen to offer an ethical Halal alternative to mainstream baby foods.

The range, with its choices of lamb and chicken dishes, offers a choice in weaning foods including breakfast and main course.
