Anyone for ostrich?

The popularity of farmers' markets is growing all the time, with new events springing up all over the country, with some offering some unusual meaty treats.

Worksop, Nottinghamshire, has just hosted its first monthly farmers' market in its town centre, and has hailed it a great success. Ostrich burgers, continental cheeses, smoked meats, honey and herbs were all on offer on Friday, 16 June, and stallholders and shoppers agreed the market was a great addition to the town.

Sally Collingham, who chairs the Association of Notts Farmers' Markets, was running the Highwood Farm fresh meats stall.

She said: "The day went really, really well and customers and other stall holders who I spoke to seemed to be of the same opinion."

Valerie Jackson was shopping in town and bought an ostrich burger. She said: "We have needed something like this in the town for some time now. It is great to have something different for people to buy, and I don't think I have ever seen Bridge Street so busy during the day."

David Atkinson, market superintendent for Worksop, said the event had got off to a great start. "From what I can tell, everyone appears to have enjoyed the experience and the stall holders have done a roaring trade," he said.
