Packed lunch nutrition poor

 - Published:  11 January, 2007

First it was the standard of school dinners, but now campaigners are focusing their attentions on the poor nutrition offered in many packed lunches.

Researchers claimed only 3.5% of packed lunches parents are sending their children to school with carry the five foods recommended by the Food Standards Agency, and less than half, 44.3%, contained two or less.

Nutritionists claim the ideal packed lunch would contain a ham and cheese sandwich, a piece of celery, a small yoghurt and some fruit.

The study was carried out in Avon among 621 seven-year-old children.

The results show that children eating school dinners are getting higher intakes of protein and dietary fibre than those with packed lunches.
