Supermarket wins environmental award
Asda's has been named 'Multiple Environmental Retailer of the Year' at this year's prestigious Retail Industry Awards
staged in London on 27 September.
Asda won the inaugural accolade for its common sense approach to sustainable retailing, beating off strong competition from the likes of Marks & Spencer and Morrison's. The annual awards celebrate the best in retailing in both the multiple and independent sectors.
Asda's winning entry hinged on initiatives on reducing waste. It is committed to sending zero waste to landfill by 2010. It also is committed to eliminating packaging by reducing its own brand food packaging weight and carrier bag usage by 25% by the end of 2008. And to save energy, Asda is committed to reduce the CO2 emissions from stores and depots by 20% by 2012.
Asda said it's heritage of green retailing dates back to the 1980s when Archie Norman coined the phrase 'We hate waste of any kind'.
Chief executive, Andy Bond, said: "We are absolutely delighted to win this award. It recognises all of the hard work we have put in over the last 18 months to drive our green initiatives."
