Sausage company wins award
A Welwyn-based businessman has received well-earned recognition at an awards ceremony at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, for his success in setting up his own sausage business.
David Nye was among the winners of Strathclyde's inaugural Enterprise Awards, made to some of the smartest and most inventive businesses connected to the University. He won the Most Promising New Start-up award for his Traditional British Sausage Company.
The award was presented at a dinner held to honour flourishing companies which have been supported by the University's enterprise network, and in particular, through its entrepreneurial network, essential. The ceremony was hosted by stv news presenter and Strathclyde graduate Debi Edward and a number of successful Scottish entrepreneurs attended, including Michael Mone, Managing Director of MJM International.
After David earned a BA from Strathclyde's Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management in 2005, he returned to Hertfordshire and spent the summer selling traditional sausages made by a local butcher. He gave music fans bangers with their bebop at the Ealing Jazz Festival and served sizzlers at the river during the London Thames Festival.
David has since built up his brand and is now manufacturing sausages, made to his own recipe, which he is providing wholesale to local restaurants. He has created an enviable supply infrastructure and has already been contacted by a number of interested investors.
Dr David McBeth, Director of Research and Innovation at Strathclyde, said: "The awards are being presented to give credit to the innovative, creative companies the University has advised and supported and to inspire others to follow their example.
"The range and quality of companies in contention is a testament to their imagination and to the enterprising approach which is fostered at Strathclyde.
"The University of Strathclyde is committed to advising and supporting, through the essential network, start-up companies of the University's staff, students, alumni and friends. We hope this awards ceremony will be the first of many events of this kind."
