WELSH SUPPLIER FORCED TO RENAME PRODUCT by trading standards bosses

Welsh Dragon Sausage manufacturer - Black Mountains Smokery in Powys - has been forced by Trading Standards authority to change the name of its product, to avoid confusion about what meat it contains.

Jonathan and Joanna Carthew, who own the smokery, said no-one had every been surprised or disappointed that the sausages were not made from dragon meat. Despite a list of ingredients clearly marked on the pack, the Carthews received a letter from Trading Standards informing them they were in breach of the Food Labelling Regulations 1996.

Joanna said: "We changed the label. We haven't got time to stand around arguing. We just think it's a shame because it spoils the marketing impact of the sausages. They're now called Welsh Dragon Sausages followed by pork in big lettering."

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: "The product Welsh Dragon Sausage that was sampled by the council's Trading Standard Service was not sufficiently precise to inform a purchaser of the true nature of the food."
