Thatcher's sausage challenge
Having your sausage judged by Carol Thatcher is the stuff of most people's nightmares, but it did not deter finalists for this year's Supreme Sausage Sarnie competition
Having your sausage judged by Carol Thatcher is the stuff of most people's nightmares, but that didn't put off the hundreds of people who entered this year's Supreme Sausage Sarnie competition, as part of British Sausage Week.
Four finalists were chosen in each of the six regional catchment areas and Carol travelled round the country, tasting the sandwiches made in cook-off sessions. Recipes included a Mexican themed sandwich of pork and jalapeno sausage with guacamole, and a new Northern classic: pork, apricot and rosemary sausage with an onion and Wensleydale sauce encased in a Yorkshire pudding bun.
Feedback midweek suggested all the finalists were enjoying the experience. "The response has been amazing," said a spokesperson. "The finalists were a bit nervous at first but they loved meeting Carol Thatcher and other sausage fans. She's very keen to promote sausages and British meat."
Butchers have been heavily involved in British Sausage Week, which took place between 30 October and 5 November. BPEX, which organises the event, sent out promotional packs to encourage sales and inspire butchers to create new recipes.
