Cranswick is hit with redundancy pay order

A gourmet sausage manufacturing company has lost an appeal against an employment tribunal decision that it must pay a total of £146,000 in redundancy payments to staff.

Cranswick Country Foods closed a plant in Thornaby, near Middlesborough, in November 2004 and moved production to its plant in Hull. Following the move, workers claimed before the employment tribunal that they had not been fully consulted over the move and the loss of jobs.

Ruling in their favour, the tribunal ordered that Cranswick pay 82 staff up to £4,600 each. This is now the third appeal against the decision by Cranswick.

According to the GMB, who took up the workers case, any further appeals will now have to go through the Court of Appeal. Cranswick declined to comment. The company took over the former Lazenby's business in Thornaby in 1998 for £4.5m.
