A Lincolnshire based rendering firm has been fined a total in excess of £10,000 after animal effluent overflowed into a watercourse damaging the environment.

A.Hughes of Skellingthorpe admitted pollution offences during a hearing before Lincoln magistrates.

The court heard that the incident took place last summer when unprecedentedly high rain fall levels caused a waste tank to overflow.

The Environment Agency prosecutor said that company employees only checked the tank once a week, and the tank had overflowed several days before it was checked.

In mitigation it was said that the tank was now checked daily.

The firm was fined £8,000 with £3,200 costs.
