Grampian Country pork plant closes
The Grampain Country Pork plant in Elmswell, Suffolk, has finally closed-up following a consultation period. According to reports, so far 243 out of the 380 staff at the plant have not found new jobs.
The plant, one of the biggest employers in the area, was founded in 1911 trading as Farm Kitchen Foods. It closed following a lengthy company review process.
An USDAW representative at the plant said: "There are 243 people who have not got any work. There is no work in this area. Most of these people are factory workers who have worked hard, shown their commitment and ability but do not have qualifications."
A Grampian spokesman said: "Following the closure of its pork processing facility at Elmswell, Grampian Country Food Group would like to thank all of its colleagues at Elmswell for their hard work and commitment to the business, many of whom have been at the site for many years.
"The decision to close the Elmswell site was as a result of continued manufacturing overcapacity within the pork sector combined with rising costs which the business has been unable to recoup," he said.
