Roadworthy rams

Ensuring that a ram is fit for work has never been more important according to HCC Meat Promotion Wales, which, in conjunction with Innovis Ltd, has organised a series of autumn workshops designed to help breeders to maximise outputs from rams.

The afternoon workshops will cover the key aspects of a ram MOT and general health check to help to ensure that he is fit, healthy and reproductively sound.

The courses will offer advice and a key checklist to help farmers purchase the right ram at the autumn sales and Innovis will also be offering fertility clinics for rams.

Workshops, held at Innovis' Peithyll Centre near Aberystwyth and at other locations in north and south Wales depending on demand, are free of charge.

Prys Morgan, HCC's industry development manager said: "Ram lambs and newly purchased rams should always be checked before being used for the first time.

"Stresses caused by changes in management, nutrition, or infections can all affect semen quality as can hot weather. Checks are therefore particularly important after the very hot conditions this summer."

Courses are being run by Innovis with support from HCC and cost £200 per person. Participants may be eligible for a grant from Lantra to support training.
