Montenegro not bust

 - Published:  17 July, 2006

The meat industry of Europe's newest independent state, Montenegro, is to be boosted by a E1.5m cash injection from the European Union (EU). The money is to be used to set up effective livestock identification and registration systems.

Such controls have always been considered weak in Montenegro, which is no mean producer of cattle: there are 120,000 head in this tiny Balkan country, on 37,000 (often small) farms.

Sheep and goats will also be registered under the scheme, which will be funded by the EU's European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR).

Montenegro EAR chief Rainer Freund said: "The system will increase consumer confidence of locally produced meat-based products and have a positive impact on the development of the food market and industry."
