Kebab houses in meat scam
A Trading Standards Office probe in Leicestershire has caught owners of doner kebab food outlets substituting cheaper cuts of chicken and beef for lamb.
A Trading Standards Office probe in Leicestershire has caught owners of doner kebab food outlets substituting cheaper cuts of chicken and beef for lamb.
Five out of the 20 outlets tested were found by the TSOs to be offering the cheaper meat.
TSOs have now warned that they will be making further spot checks and that further breaches of the law will mean prosecutions with a possible maximum fine of £5,000.
In selling the different meats the traders are breaching the Trade Descriptions Act which bars companies from selling anything other than what is described on the food menu.
David Bull, head of trading standards for the county commented: "Customers expect doner kebabs to be madeof lamb or mutton.
"Other types of kebab meat are available from wholesalers but if retailers want to put these on their menus, they must make it clear what other meat is used.
"We will continue to take occasional samples of doner kebabs with a view to making sure customers are getting what they expect, and what they are paying for."
