NZ marks 125 years meat trade with UK

The Dunedin, a sailing ship, arrived in London 98 days after leaving New Zealand with nearly 5,000 carcases of lamb, mutton and pork on board on 15 February 1882.

It was the start of what has become a $NZ 5b export industry. And in the years since, New Zealand lamb has acquired a reputation for producing free-range meat that can be enjoyed when British lamb is out of season.

To mark the event, New Zealand is holding a National Lamb Day, which will encourage people from New Zealand and across the world to make a point of enjoying this iconic New Zealand dish.

John Mabb, market manager for Meat and Wool New Zealand in the UK, said: "The 125th year of continuous trading with the UK is a significant achievement and New Zealand lamb is just as eagerly awaited onto the market now as it was then."
