M&S in deal to supply NZ lamb all year round
Genetics and co-operation are key to a successful lamb offer for Marks & Spencer.
An innovative new initiative between the retailer and New Zealand lamb supplier Rissington is aimed at ensuring consumers receive top-quality lamb, all year round.
To ensure consistency between the NZ season and the British season, M&S is working with Rissington to produce a lamb designed to maximise flavour and succulence. The initiative follows on from round-table discussions during last year's agricultural shows and is designed to strengthen relationships between UK and NZ producers by sharing experiences and discussing ways to enhance lamb quality.
Rob Cumine, agricultural expert at M&S, said: "We are regularly in NZ, talking with our M&S farmers and processors there. The commitment in NZ to genetic advancement and their numbers of sheep convinced us that a joint programme, covering our lamb production in both hemispheres, was the way forward.
"We are very excited by this international opportunity to bring the same M&S approach to lamb as we have succeeded in doing with Oakham chicken, Muir Den pork and Aberdeen Angus beef," added Cumine.
Farmers from both NZ and the UK met at the Royal Welsh Show last week to continue discussions on the initiative.
