Welsh lamb for UAE?

 - Published:  28 April, 2006

Welsh lamb could soon be on United Arab Emirates' dinner tables after a top-level Arab delegation visited farms and processors in the region.

The UAE visitors, including Jassim Mohamed Bin Darwish, secretary general of the Municipalities of the United Arab Emirates, came over as part of a Team Wales WAG/HCC marketing drive, headed by Environment, Planning and Countryside Minister, Carwyn Jones.

The delegation made several stops across the Welsh supply chain, where production quality and traceability were demonstrated.

HCC also highlighted the Welsh products' Protect Geographical Indicator Status (PGI). "PGI is an independent assurance of origin and it is vital to our arguments to add value and differentiate our quality red meat from that of competitors," said HCC/Meat Promotion Wales' marketing manager Stewart Pope.

Lamb is a big seller in UAE, said Pope, and could offer good opportunities for 13-15kg Welsh hill lambs.
