A PROCESSOR and wholesaler of pork, poultry, lamb and other meats has received a Queen's Award for Enterprise after applying for an award for the first time.

Jeffrey Davies and Davies, based in Dunton Green, Kent is one of 11 businesses to have won an award in the food and drink sector. The awards were announced today (21 April) on Her Majesty The Queen's 80th birthday.

The company started trading in 1977 and Managing Director, Jeff Davies said: "It proves that it is possible to have success in a market place that is extremely difficult. In the most recent year that this award relates to, we exported over 13,000 tonnes of pork, poultry and other meats to Europe and the Far East. This was against the background of avian flu and the other hygiene issues that beset our industry. It takes something very special from staff, suppliers and customers to achieve these results."

He said the award in the International Trade Category reflected the achievements in meat exports over the past few years. Over the three year period used for assessing the award, the Exports of the business have grown by over 65%. New markets were opened in diverse countries such as South Korea, Latvia and Hungary bringing the total number of countries served to 16. In total, the Queen announced a total of 145 Awards.
