Welsh Abattoir Forced to Close
A Welsh abattoir has been forced to suspend its operations until the ban on meat exports is lifted.
Cig Cibyn abattoir in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, has been forced to lay off 47 of its workers following the FMD outbreaks, and 17 further jobs are at risk.
About 70% of meat handled at the abattoir is exported and directors of the company have described the situation as "desperate." They have cited rising costs and a flooded domestic market as reasons for closure.
Farmers and politicians have called on the Welsh Assembly government to intervene with financial assistance and there is hope that an aid package will be organised through the assembly and Gwynedd Council to enable the abattoir to survive.
