Increase in lamb exports to Europe set to continue

Exports of lamb to Europe rose by seven per cent from January to September this year, according to figures released in December by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX). This trend was expected to continue through to the end of 2005 although f

inal figures are not yet available.

Total sheep meat exports from January to September 2005 rose from 51,700 tonnes to 55,100 tonnes with France's share of the market topping the list of customers with an increase from 39,500 tonnes to 41,200 tonnes.

Exports also increased to Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Germany and Belgium.

Jean-Pierre Garnier, EBLEX Meat Export Manager, said: "We have been working very hard alongside our exporters to increase our share of the export market. Now our hard work is starting to pay off.

"EBLEX has had successful supermarket promotions in France, Italy and Belgium."
