Foot and mouth suspected outside control zones

 - Published:  10 August, 2007

A farm outside of the original control and surveillance zones in Surrey is being tested because of suspected foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

So far, FMD has been confirmed on two farms. Testing is taking place on a third farm within the original control and surveillance zones as well as on this fourth potential farm affected.

Defra announced last night that a 3km temporary control zone has been put around the fourth farm, thought to be just outside Dorking, which is outside the existing surveillance zone.

This precautionary measure follows an inconclusive assessment of clinical symptoms by Animal Health veterinary staff. The national movement ban remains in place. In addition, in the Temporary Control Zone, general licences will not apply for the movement of animals to slaughter and collection of dead animals from farms, said Defra.
