Somerfield teams up with South west beef farmers

Somerfield has teamed up with Blade Farming South West and Hilton Meats International in partnership with a group of 14 beef producers in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Richard and Hazel Hoskin of Dorchester, Dorset and Adam and Natalie Stanbury of Combe Martin, North Devon are in a supply chain partnership where a fair price above the cost of production is paid to each producer for a quality product.

The Hoskins and Stanburys are properly rewarded for a premium product, helping to create a more secure future for their businesses.

Richard Hoskin said: "This is really important to us as it's giving the farm stability and we're able to plan for the future."

Adam Stanbury said: "The consumer gets to eat tender beef full of flavour, consistent in quality and fully traceable and we have security and confidence in our business by being able to produce a quality product which gives us a fair return."

A Somerfield spokesman said: "We're passionate about great quality, regional produce and equally sensitive to the sustainability issues facing West Country farmers. This has led us to develop our partnership to produce branded premium beef for local customers, born, bred and processed in the region, with a guaranteed margin to the farmer."
